A nonaqueous electrolyte for electric double layer capacitor having reduced the danger of ignition or inflammation of an aprotic organic solvent remaining in the capacitor or an aprotic organic solvent lying outside the capacitor by leakage through vaporization, etc. as experienced at an abnormal rise of the temperature of the electric double layer capacitor. More particularly, there is provided a nonaqueous electrolyte for electric double layer capacitor characterized in that at least one aprotic organic solvent and a support salt are contained therein, each individual aprotic organic solvent containing a compound having a 25°C or less boiling point difference from that of the aprotic organic solvent and containing phosphorus and/or nitrogen in its molecule.
