PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus which suppresses such a problem that recording of a variety of programs is limited and the vacant capacity of a recording medium is depleted. SOLUTION: A reservation information table 10 records reservation information 201 including the channel number of each video recording-reserved program, a video recording start time, a video recording finish time, and attributes 15. A group information table 20 records group information 301 including a total capacity setting value 22 for each group. An MPU 105 erases selectively a video recording-completed program of a group when the total quantity of data of the video-recorded program of the same group exceeds the capacity setting value 22 of the group (ST111).
