PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel direct injection type diesel engine capable of restricting the generation of NOx and reducing PM, smoke and fuel consumption rate. SOLUTION: A combustion chamber 20 opened on a cylinder head 5 side is provided in the top surface 11 of a piston 10, and the combustion chamber 20 is structured of a first capacity part 22 having an inclined surface 21 and a second capacity part 23 recessed from the first capacity part 22 toward a pin boss 13. In the first half time of fuel injection, spray F is injected from a fuel injection nozzle 9 toward an inner peripheral wall surface part 24 of the second capacity part 23, and in the second half time of fuel injection, spray F is injected to the inclined surface 21 of the first capacity part 22, and at that time, rate of fuel injection period of the first half time in relation to the whole period of fuel injection is set at 40-70 %.
