<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display technology in which astigmatism caused by a polarizing splitter means is corrected and the resolution of a projection image is ensured. <P>SOLUTION: As the polarizing splitter means, a structure in the form of a flat plate, such as a wire grid type of polarizing splitter element, is used.
