PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly correct a fuel supply quantity in starting, by determining a quantity of fuel leaking out in a cylinder 12 from a fuel injection valve 16 when stopping an engine with a simple constitution, in a starter for starting the engine by itself without using a starting motor, by supplying, igniting and burning the fuel in the cylinder 12 in at least an expansion stroke of a multicylinder engine 1 in stopping. SOLUTION: When the engine 1 stops in response to OFF operation of an IG switch 33 (SD1 to 4), an air quantity in the cylinder 12 in the expansion stroke is detected (SD5 and 6). This cylinder 12 is repeatedly ignited at a preset time interval (SD7), and time up to igniting an air-fuel mixture of the leaked-out fuel is measured (SD8 and 9). A fuel leakage quantity in ignition is determined from the air quantity in the cylinder 12 and the ignition limit air-fuel ratio on the lean side, and a time change in the fuel leakage quantity in the cylinder 12 is estimated on the basis of this fuel quantity and the measured time (SD10).
