The invention relates to a portable sampler ( 1 ) for use in an explosion-endangered area, having a housing ( 5 ), in which at least the following components are arranged: a pump unit ( 8 ) having a first drive unit ( 9 ), a sensor ( 10 ) for determining the amount of sample supplied from the pump unit ( 8 ), a control unit ( 6 ), which controls the taking of a desired amount of sample and the filling thereof into at least one container ( 13 ), and at least one power supply unit ( 7 ), which provides the power for driving the first drive unit ( 9 ), the sensor ( 10 ) and the control unit ( 6 ), wherein the components ( 6, 7, 9, 10 ) are modularly constructed and wherein each module ( 6, 7, 9, 10 ) is embodied such that it satisfies a specified ignition protection type.
