<p>An antimicrobial agent comprising 7,8-dihydrokawain as an active ingredient, which antimicrobial agent is capable of controlling or preventing bacteria such as those of the genera Bacillus, Escherichia and Pseudomonas, yeasts such as those of the genera Saccharomyces and Rhodotorula, molds such as those of the genera Alternaria, Cladosporium, Fusarium and Eurotium, etc. The above 7,8-dihydrokawain may be obtained from an organic solvent extract of a plant belonging to the species Piper methysticum or a matter resulting from treatment thereof. This antimicrobial agent exerts high controlling capability, being highly safe to human and livestock, and does not have hazardous impact on environment.</p> |
