PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnesium-based hydrogen occluding material and a lithium-based hydrogen occluding material each of which has large hydrogen occluding capacity and can occlude hydrogen at a lower temperature. SOLUTION: This magnesium-based hydrogen occluding material is obtained by mechanically crushing a magnesium-based raw material consisting of MgH<SB>2</SB>and a lithium-transition metal compound oxide. This lithium-based hydrogen occluding material is obtained by mechanically crushing a lithium-based raw material consisting of a hydrogen-occludable/dischargeable lithium compound and the lithium-transition metal compound oxide. In these hydrogen occluding materials, the lithium-transition metal compound oxide is combined with the magnesium or lithium compound in a highly dispersed state.
