An obstacle device (12) for use on a playing field is formed from a frame approximating in shape the front profile of a human head and torso. The fram e may include an elongate support member (16) and a frame member (64) in the form of a resilient, flexible hoop that is coupled to the support member (16 ). The frame may also include a head piece (54). The frame member (64) has an expanded configuration that defnes an expanded frame area. The frame member (64) is resiliently deformable to a collapsed qonfiguration that defines a collapsed frame area that is less than the expanded frame area. A layer of fabric material (70) is attached to the frame member (64) so that the fabric material is spread by the frame when the frame member (64) is in the expande d configuration.
