PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing apparatus and method capable of detecting a more significant frame when a representative frame is detected from a moving picture. SOLUTION: The image processing apparatus extracts a frame from the moving picture, determines a frame to obtain correlation on the basis of a temporal positional relation between the extracted frame and a representative frame located temporally earlier than the extracted frame, detects a frame to be recorded on the basis of the correlation between the determined frame and the extracted frame, determines a frame located in the vicinity of the detected frame and more suitable than the detected frame as the representative frame, and stores information on the determined frame.
