PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily and appropriately determine quality, by automatically computing the presence or absence of immersed split grains and their ratio to a sampling number on the basis of photometric data on granular objects to be inspected which contain moisture. SOLUTION: Water 66 is stored in a tray 72, and polished rice 56 is immersed in it and left standing for a prescribed time (approximately 20 minutes), and then the polished rice 56 in this state is (photometrically) imaged by a head part 34. On the basis of image data converted from photometric data, coordinates of contour points (m) and the centers 58 of gravity of the polished rice 56 are determined. The distances RG<SB>m</SB>from the centers 58 of gravity to the contour points (m) and the amount DR<SB>m</SB>of change are computed and compared with distance threshold RL and threshold DL for the amounts of change, to determine the presence or absence of immersed split grains. The mixture ratio of the immersed split grains can thus be discriminated and lot quality of the lot of the polished rice can be discriminated more speedily and accurately than by workers discriminating them visually.
