The invention relates to a control system (1) for a motor vehicle, comprising a manual actuating means (3) with a number of adjusting degrees of freedom for selecting and/or activating entries in a menu structure having a number of menu levels and a screen display (2) with a number of display areas for displaying the menu structure, whereby the display areas each have at least one field for displaying one of the entries. According to the invention, at least two adjusting degrees of freedom of the manual actuating means (3) move a cursor for selecting and/or activating one of the entries in an active display area, whereby a first adjusting degree of freedom corresponds to a turning movement of the manual actuating means (3) in a clockwise direction about a z-axis perpendicular to the xy-plane, whereby a second adjusting degree of freedom corresponds to a turning movement of the manual actuating means (3) in a counterclockwise direction about a z-axis perpendicular to the xy-plane. In addition, a direction of movement of the cursor in the active display area effected by the first and/or second adjusting degree of freedom of the manual actuating means (3) is dependent on the orientation of the entries displayed in the active display area.
