A simple construction banister for a staircase has the upright supports (1) with a three part construction. A lower section (6) is fitted into the side supports (5) for the staircase. An upper section (10) is secured into the underside of the handrail (12) while the middle section (8) completes the support via threaded connections to the sleeves. The design provides a universal fit for different lengths of uprights. The design can be extended to pendant mounted steps with the upper ends of the supports located into the handrail via thrust couplings. The parts of the uprights can be made of any suitable material preferably metal, and can be provided with a protective coating.
