PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium having high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, perpendicular coercive force and saturation magnetization. SOLUTION: The perpendicular magnetic recording medium has a non-magnetic substrate, a soft magnetic layer, a non-magnetic crystal orientation controlling layer comprising a metal or an alloy having a hexagonal close-packed structure or a face-centered cubic structure, a non-magnetic template layer comprising a metal or an alloy selected from any metal of Cu, Ir, Rh, Pd, Pt, C, Os, Re, Ru, Tc and Zn, an alloy containing at least one of Cu, Ir, Rh, Pd, Pt, C, Os, Re, Ru, Tc and Zn, a non-magnetic Ni alloy, and a non-magnetic Co alloy and having a hexagonal close-packed structure or a face-centered cubic structure, a perpendicular magnetization layer wherein ferromagnetic crystal particles containing Co and Pt and a non-magnetic grain boundary or a gap corresponding to the grain boundary are formed and a protective layer.
