PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the influence of a host device on an online task at the time of executing the sort processing of data in a storage system. SOLUTION: A storage controller 12 of a storage system 2 receives sort instructions to designate a sort object record group and a sort key from external equipment such as a host device 1, and reads the sort object code group in an external storage device 11 to a cache memory 123, and executes the sort processing of the record group by using the cache memory 123 and a work area secured in the external storage device 11, and restores the sorted record group in a predetermined output area in the external storage device 11. When a plurality of sort instructions are received, the work area is automatically assigned so that the work area cannot be overlapped. When record update is generated in an online task, the snapshot of the updated record is taken, and the sort of the snapshot is executed so that the sort processing can be executed during the online task.
