PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce loads of a drive device by adjusting a weight balance between a car side and a balance weight side without a need of multiple incidental facilities or enlarging the device. SOLUTION: This elevator comprises a drive device 4 having a drive sheave 5; a main cable 3 wound around the drive sheave 5; a car 1 and a balance weight 2 suspended and elevated in an elevating path by the main cable 3; a balance chain 7 suspended by connecting with the car 1 on one end and with the balance weight 2 on the other end; and winding drums 8a, 8b adjusting a weight balance between the car 1 and the balance weight 2, and chain containers 9a, 9b.
