A projector capable of favorably correcting a polarization condition and improving an image quality, and a phase difference plate used in a projector or the like and capable of favorably correcting a polarization condition and a method of arranging a phase difference plate. A 1/4 wavelength plate (22) for correcting a polarization condition is disposed between a reflection type spatial modulator (21) and a PBS (20). The 1/4 wavelength plate (22) consists of a combination of first and second phase difference plates (41), (42) that generate different phase difference quantities. Since the phase differences generated by these two phase difference plates (41), (42) are set to phase difference quantities appropriate for their arrangement conditions, the 1/4 wavelength plate (22), although being a combination of two phase difference plates, can deliver a performance equal to or higher than that of a single-sheet plate in correcting a polarization condition.
