<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve visual angle dependency, especially, visual angle dependency of a contrast ratio and a display color. <P>SOLUTION: This liquid crystal display element is constituted of at least one polarizing plate 1 or 4, a liquid crystal cell for driving having liquid crystal 3e interposed between two substrates 3a and 3b. and at least one optically anisotropic element 2 and 5 constituted of one or more layers of optically anisotropic units. Angles formed between optical axes of the layers of the optically anisotropic units which constitute the optically anisotropic element on the sides near and far to the liquid crystal cell for driving and the surface of the optically anisotropic element are nearly equal to each other, an angle of an optical axis of an intermediate layer is changed, and the optically anisotropic element has negative optical anisotropy in the thickness direction. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
