PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image pickup device, a method for recording a video file and a program capable of continuing video taking even if a remaining capacity for recording gets low. SOLUTION: After completing steps S1 to S4 for preparing the video taking, the video taking is started. If the remaining capacity of a storage memory is smaller than a file size of the video to be recorded (steps S5, S6), the control unit displays an alarm massage on a display unit indicating the remaining quantity is insufficient (step S12). When a user performs a chapter direction (file re-creation direction) input by pressing a shutter button halfway (step S13), video data stored in a temporary recording memory is divided into a predetermined number and compressed. The multiple video files of a predetermined file size are thus created (step S14), which are stored in a storage memory 500 with a same file name added thereto (step S15).
