PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for using a linear sensor to enhance the resolution at image reading, reading a read face without region division, so as to eliminate the need for software processing required for pasting, thereby reducing the reading time, capable of reading an original placed on a desktop and providing ease of carrying and to provide an image reading method. SOLUTION: The image reading method includes: a step S4 of receiving the selection denoting a state of a read face of an original is not a plane through the operation of an operating unit for designating the state; a step S10 of measuring a height of each position on the read face from a reference face; a step S14 of correcting a preset lens position in response to a reflected position of a read light beam scanned onto the read face on the basis of the measured height at each position of the read face; and steps S15, S16 of imaging an optical image focused at the corrected lens position with a one-dimensional solid-state imaging element.
