PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prolong fatigue life of side edges of the metal ring of a metal belt for a continuously variable transmission. SOLUTION: As shown in Fig. (A), the most projected parts 33c are formed in the widthwise direction on side edges of the metal ring 33 of the metal belt for a continuously variable transmission. The projected parts 33c are each positioned between the central surface C and the inside peripheral surface I both in the radial direction of the metal ring 33. Thus, each position P where the projected part 33c comes in contact with a V-surface 38 of each of the pulleys 5, 7 is positioned closer to the central surface C than to the peripheral surface I. Thus, the sum of the compression stress which is produced by bending and acts on the metal ring 33 wound around the pulleys 5, 7, and Hertzian stress which is produced by contact of the projected parts 33c with the V-faces 38 of the pulleys 5, 7 is reduced. Consequently, the fatigue life of the metal ring 33 is prolonged more than that of the comparison example of Fig. (B). Further, when the metal rings 33 are laminated, recesses are formed to hold oil between respective side edges, and the oil effectively lubricates sliding surfaces of the neighboring metal rings 33 to enhance the durability.
