PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium having a high medium S/N by reducing distribution of a grain boundary width of the magnetic recording medium having a granular structure. SOLUTION: In a base layer constituted of crystal grains having a nearly cylindrical structure and the magnetic recording layer constituted of magnetic crystal grains having a nearly cylindrical structure and a grain boundary layer, a grain diameter Dm in the magnetic recording layer and grain diameter Du in the base layer are made to satisfy the relation of Du×0.8<Dm<Du and the normalized dispersion value of the grain boundary obtained by dividing standard deviation of grain boundary width distribution by an average grain boundary width is specified to be≤0.4.
