PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a molten metal surface detection sensor for surely detecting a fall of a molten metal surface even in cases where a solidified material is easily formed from the molten metal on the surface of the molten metal, as to a contact-type molten metal surface detection sensor for detecting the fall of the molten metal surface based on whether contact has taken place with the molten metal. SOLUTION: This sensor comprises a sensor body 3 and a cylinder 11 for vertically moving the sensor body 3 at prescribed time intervals. A rising end side metal plate 10 and a falling end side metal plate 9 are disposed on a rising end A and a falling end B of the sensor body 3, respectively. When the sensor body 3 is positioned at the rising end A or the falling end B, a part of the sensor body 3 collides with the metal plate 10 or 9. This impact propagates through the sensor body 3 to break down the solidified material of the molten metal deposited on an end part 3a of the sensor body 3. This can prevent erroneous determination in detection caused by the deposition of the solidified material of the molten metal on the sensor body 3, making it possible to surely detecting that the molten metal surface has fallen lower than a reference height.
