PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent ill effect to a starter by relaxing or shutting off the transmission of impact torque following an inverse rotation, when a crank shaft is inversely rotated temporarily until an engine 3 is stopped after the stop operation is made. SOLUTION: A motor control unit 5 executes motor reversal control for inversely rotating a motor 6 until the engine 3 is stopped, when the stop operation of the engine 3 is made. The motor reversal control is made by allowing a shunt current to flow to a shunt coil 14 in an inverse direction as compared with a case when the engine is started via a drive circuit 4. As a result, even if a crank shaft is rotated inversely and temporarily after the stop operation of the engine 3 is performed, a one-way clutch incorporated in a starter is not locked, thus relaxing the transmission of impact torque by the inverse rotation of a crank shaft. Especially when a gear type speed reduction device is incorporated, inconveniences, such as the wear of a gear and the chipping of a gear, can be prevented. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
