OPTICAL DISK DEVICE, ITS CONTROL METHOD AND RECORDING MEDIUM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical disk device in which the basic standards of an optical disk is discriminated while the kinds of same standard and rewritable type optical disks are automatically discriminated based on the characteristics of the recording films and to provide its control method. SOLUTION: First and second optical disks which have recording films having mutually different characteristics and have a single layered recording layer and third and fourth optical disks which have recording films having mutually different characteristics and have a double layered recording layer are selectively mounted on an optical disk device. A control section 420 conducts mounting discrimination of the first to the fourth disks based on the levels of reproduced signals from an optical head 402. The recording media of the above optical disks are formed so that no overlap exists between the optical reflectivities of the initialized condition of a single layer L-H medium and the initialized condition of an LO layer of a double layer H-L medium and the un-initialized condition of the LO layer of a double layer L-H medium and the optical reflectivity of the initialized condition of a single layer H-L medium.
