DEVICE, METHOD, OPTICAL AMPLIFICATION DEVICE, AND OPTICAL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for optical amplification suitable for wavelength division multiplex (WDM) and a system including the device where a gain characteristic is maintained constant to obtain a wide input dynamic range, while requiring a relatively low power pump light.

SOLUTION: An optical amplification device includes a first optical amplifier for amplifying a wavelength division multiplexed light with a first variable gain, a second optical amplifier for amplifying the wavelength division multiplexed light which is amplified by the first optical amplifier with a second variable gain, and a gain controller which detects a deviation in the first variable gain of the first optical amplifier from a target gain and controls the second variable gain of the second optical amplifier to compensate for the detected deviation, thereby maintaining a sum of the first and second variable gains constant.
