<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a divide driving method of a line type thermal printer which can improve a printing quality as well as a printing speed. <P>SOLUTION: In the line type thermal printer 1, a line thermal head 2 is divided to a plurality of printing blocks. A necessary number of the printing blocks are sequentially dividedly driven on the basis of a printing dot total number of one dot line, whereby printing of one dot line amount is carried out to a recording medium transferred by a stepping motor 4. In the case where a divide number of the printing blocks necessary for printing one dot line increases (at the time of shifting from a printing period of time T2 to T3), an original energization switching time point ta for switching a driving speed of the stepping motor to a low speed is set to be a time point t3 delayed by a predetermined time Ta. By inserting the delay time Ta, a response delay of a transfer speed of the recording medium to the driving switching of the stepping motor 4 can be suppressed, and transfer unevenness of the recording medium is restricted and disorder of a printing dot pitch is restricted.
