PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state imaging device capable of cutting down the number of pixels at least in a vertical direction and of outputting high-frame-rate motion pictures. SOLUTION: A vertical transfer section 3 includes one shift gate (V1, V3, V5) for each of photoelectric conversion elements 2 and besides an iterative gate structure for defining, as one gate group, a plurality of vertically consecutive gates of m units (m denotes an integer number of 1 or more) when defining vertically consecutive n (n denotes integer number more than 1) pieces of the photoelectric elements as one unit. At least one shift gate within one unit in each of gate groups is interconnected separately so as to be driven independently of a corresponding shift gate in the other unit within the same gate group. A readout voltage is applied to one of the shift gates interconnected separately and the corresponding shift gate of the other unit within the same gate group in each gate group when performing one-time readout.
