A speed control method and device enabling enhanced landing accuracy realized even if the frequency is changed to an arbitrary set value, by which the degradation of the riding quality because of the variation of gravity and vibration due to sharp speed reduction of the car of an elevator is solved. A speed controller of an inverter for elevators is used for controlling the acceleration, constant speed, and deceleration of an induction motor (5) by means of an inverter of open-loop control and for decelerating the motor at a constant deceleration when the car (8) of an elevator reaches a deceleration start position at a given distance from the landing position. The elevating/lowering distance of when the motor is decelerated at a constant deceleration from a reference frequency to a leveling frequency when the induction motor (5) is stopped is determined in advance. The elevating/lowering distance is adjusted by operating the motor at a constant speed at an intermediate frequency so that the determined distance may be equal to the elevating/lowering distance of when the motor is decelerated at a constant deceleration from an arbitrary frequency to the leveling frequency. After the elevating/lowering distance is adjusted, the motor is automatically decelerated at a constant deceleration to the leveling frequency.
