PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin roller which is held by using liquid reacting to a magnetic field to realize contrary factors of thinning for reduction in thermal capacity and higher rigidity for increase in processing precision, and improved in rigidity, and a method for manufacturing the thin roller. SOLUTION: Hollow cylindrical thin rollers 10, 13, 20, and 25 used for an image forming apparatus such as a printer, a copying machine, and facsimile equipment are manufactured by using cores 11, 14, 21, and 26 which are inserted into hollow parts of the thin rollers 10, 13, 20, and 25 and have smaller external diameters than the thin rollers, liquids 12, 22, and 27 which are inserted into inner circumferential parts of the thin rollers and outer circumferential parts of the cores and vary in spring constant or/and viscosity damping coefficient according to the intensity of the magnetic field, and a magnetic field producing means 23 of producing a magnetic field to be applied to the liquids.
