PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration in comfort of occupants due to increase of engine vibrations (noises) caused by partial cylinder operation as little as possible and improve fuel consumption performance in a displacement-on-demand internal combustion engine for a vehicle. SOLUTION: The displacement-on-demand internal combustion engine for the vehicle is constructed so that it comprises an operation condition detecting means for detecting vehicle operation condition and a displacement-on-demand region setting means for setting a displacement-on-demand region in which the partial cylinder operation is performed and its operation mode is switched between all cylinder operation and the partial cylinder operation by a cylinder number controlling means. The displacement-on-demand region setting means sets a basic displacement-on-demand region as the displacement-on-demand region when a low vibration (noise) level is detected by a vibration detecting means for detecting condition concerning non-engine vibration (noise) inside a cabin, and it sets an enlarged displacement-on-demand region, which is larger than the basic displacement-on-demand region, as the displacement-on-demand region when a high vibration (noise) level is detected (S2-S5).
