To measure the tension of a blanket (12) or web, at a papermaking or finishing machine, the material passes around a roller (10) supported by a bearing mounting (11) at the machine structure (13). The tension on the material is measured by a sensor (18) at the swing bearing mounting at least at one end of the roller, e.g. a linear variable differential transformer (LVDT) sensor. The bearing mounting is carried by swing support (14,15) on a joint (16), with a spring (17) at a gap from the joint to inhibit the swing movement. The roller support swings on the joint according to the material tension, which is registered by the sensor.
