A process for forming a coating composition comprises the steps of (a) oxidising a mixture containing a plant protein and starch in water at alkaline pH and (b) heating the mixture simultaneously or subsequently relative to oxidation so as to provide a composition with a viscosity of 1 to 100 centipoise and a pH of 7.5 to 9. Preferably, the alkaline pH of step (a) is 9 to 12 and the heating of step (b) is conducted at 50 to 150{C. The starch/protein mixture is typically a flour derived from wheat, rye, triticale, maize, oat, and barley. The composition may be dried to form a flowable, particulate product. The composition may be coated onto paper, paperboard, or cardboard. A fibreboard comprising an alkali oxidised and gelatinised starch/protein mixture incorporated into the fibreboard is further disclosed. Other similar compositions and methods of manufacture are also claimed.
|
