[Also in Group XXXIV] The spindle 13 of a lathe headstock is driven by a pulley 21 and has a chuck 19 screwed thereon. Bearings 14, 15 support the spindle in the headstock 11, and a plate 24 slidable on the spindle engages the inner race 17 of bearing 14 and is canted to correct misalignment of the spindle by a ring 23 screwed on to the spindle, having adjusting screws 28. In operation, the plate 24 is moved up to the bearing by screwing up ring 23 and locking it by a set-screw 23b acting on a soft plug 23c. The plate 24 is checked for concentricity and any correction required is made by screwing up screws 28 to cant the plate and then locking the screws by grubscrews 28a. |
