PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a biochip reader capable of fully attenuating reflected exciting light which becomes the background light. SOLUTION: The biochip reader is so constituted that a sample having a flat surface is irradiated with an exciting light and the fluorescence emitted from the fluorescent substance in the sample is shaped into an image via an image shaping optical system to read the image by a photodetector. A barrier filter, having the effect of transmitting the fluorescence from the surface of the sample but attenuating the exciting light reflected from the sample, is arranged in the image forming optical system so as to allow the exciting light from the sample to enter at an incident angle of±5°or smaller.
