PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system whose structure is improved so as to attain slimming, and to provide a projection system using the projection optical system. SOLUTION: The projection optical system includes a refraction optical system having a plurality of lenses for enlarging and projecting an image formed by a display element, a reflection optical system having at least one reflection mirror arranged with inclination in the minor axis direction of a screen, and for making the image passing through the refraction optical system advance toward the screen, and the projection system includes the projection optical system. Thus, even if the projection system becomes thinner in thickness, the interference in the route of light does not occur, then, slimming can be attained while making the screen size larger.
