PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vegetation substrate which exhibits very good adhesiveness to a greening target area such as a slope, and positively prevents movement or washout of surface soil, and to provide a greening method using the substrate. SOLUTION: The vegetative substrate is formed by longitudinally dividing a trunk portion of a rigid straight trunk type plant 4 into a plurality of plant trunk pieces 4a, arranging a number of the trunk pieces at suitable intervals, and braiding the same into a screen-shaped braided item 2 by means of suitable strings 7.
