PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an esterification method which relates to a method for producing a carboxylic ester and hardly causes side reactions. SOLUTION: A monohydroxy compound represented by the formula (1): R<SP>1</SP>OH (wherein R<SP>1</SP>is an optionally substituted alkyl or aralkyl group) and a carboxylic acid represented by the formula (2): R<SP>2</SP>COOH (wherein R<SP>2</SP>is an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aryl, or aralkyl group) are subjected to dehydration condensation in the presence of a zirconium compound, provided that the zirconium compound is previously reacted with the monohydroxy compound represented by formula (1); thus, a carboxylic ester represented by the formula (3): R<SP>2</SP>COOR<SP>1</SP>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each the same as above) is produced.
