PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lateral collision shock absorbing device capable of lessening an excessive impact due to collision to be applied to an occupant by absorbing the collision energy at a lateral collision with a side door as much as practicable. SOLUTION: The lateral collision shock absorbing device 10 is equipped with an upper thick plate member 11 and a lower plate member 12 located below the upper thick plate member 11, wherein the upper and lower plate members 11 and 12 are coupled together through a shaft 13. In the event of lateral collision, the two plate members 11 and 12 fold to outside the vehicle about the shaft 13, which enlarges the stroke to allow the collision energy to be absorbed effectively.
