PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose an expansion mechanism having small occupied volume and a large expansion ratio. SOLUTION: The expansion mechanism is provided with first and second block connection bodies 1a, 1b formed by connecting a plurality of unit blocks rotatably in sequence using connecting members; a tip connection block 2C connecting the respective tips of the first and second block connection bodies; first and second winding drums 4a, 4b for winding the first and second block connection bodies; and a drum driving means for driving each winding drum. The first and second block connection bodies have connection faces LF provided with the connecting members, and non-connection faces NLF which are the back faces of the connection faces, without the connecting members. The first and second winding drums are arranged so that the non-connection faces NLF of the first and second block connection bodies abut on each other when the first and second block connection bodies are respectively delivered downward from the first and second winding drums.
