<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image carrier drive device by which the meshed positions of a plurality of image carrier gears can easily be adjusted for reducing fluctuations in the speed of the rotations of the image carrier gears, and to provide an image forming apparatus equipped with the image carrier drive device. <P>SOLUTION: The image carrier drive device 5 rotates image carriers on which images of different colors are successively transferred to a transfer body while moved facing the image carriers 11. The image carrier drive device 5 includes: a holding means in which a projecting marking 57 as a positioning means is provided for adjusting the meshed position of each image carrier gear 53 for reducing fluctuations in the speed of the rotation of the image carrier gear 53, the height of the projection is set higher than that of a rib 60, and a plurality of drive shafts and image carrier gears are sandwiched by opposite side plates; and idler gears 55 that are disposed between the image carrier gears and are freely attached or detached while the holding means kept attached.
