PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a ceria-zirconia based powder which keeps a sufficient specific surface area even under conditions in a hot atmosphere as a promoter of a ternary catalyst by adopting a wet reaction process capable of manufacturing at an industrially minimum cost as a basic process and by drying and firing a hydroxide obtained by the wet reaction process, and to provide a ceria-zirconia based powder obtained by the method. SOLUTION: The ceria-zirconia based powder having such properties that a BET specific surface area after firing at 1,000°C for 3 h is≥40 m<SP>2</SP>/g is manufactured by carrying out the steps of drying a cerium-zirconium based hydroxide obtained by a wet reaction by holding at 80 to <100% RH and 50 to <100°C for≥30 h; and calcining the dried hydroxide at 600-800°C.
