PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus constituted so that a gap between a backing roll and a measuring tool can be controlled even when the liquid pressure of a liquid storage chamber fluctuates slowly. SOLUTION: This coating apparatus is provided with: the rotary backing roll 6; a coating head 5 extended to the transverse direction of a web conveying route R from the liquid storage chamber 14 facing the web conveying route R of the backing roll 6; a liquid supplying unit 3 for forcibly sending a coating liquid M to the liquid storage chamber 14 and; a controller 4 for adjusting the gap G between the backing roll 6 and the measuring tool 15 by moving the coating head 5 forward or backward. The controller 4 is provided with a liquid pressure detector 32 for measuring the liquid pressure of the coating liquid M and controls the gap G by alternately repeating a standby time band A to make no adjustment to the gap G by the time decided by the ratio inversely proportional to the absolute value of a deviationΔP obtained by subtracting the required value from the value detected by the liquid pressure detector 32 and a control time band B to adjust the gap G by preset length Gc to be changed.
