PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing dialkylphosphinates which can produce dialkylphosphinates of specific metals in high purity using a very simple and cost effective method. SOLUTION: The method for producing a dialkylphosphinate comprises (a) reacting hypophosphorous acid and/or salts thereof with olefins in the presence of a radical initiator to produce dialkylphosphinic acids and/or alkali metal salts thereof, and (b) reacting the dialkylphosphinic acids and/or alkali metal salts thereof obtained in (a) with a compound of Mg, Ca, Al, Zn, Ti, Sn, Zr and/or Fe metal to produce dialkylphosphinates of these metals. There is also provided a method for using the metal salts of dialkylphosphinic acids obtained by the method of the present invention, in particular a method for using it in the production of flame retardants.
