The exhaust system includes a catalytic converter with lean burn probe (15) mounted in at least one of the inflow knuckle regions (11). The lean burn probe can be brought into exhaust gas contact with the exhaust gas flows in all the inlet pipes (9,10) which make up the inflow knuckle region. Each pipe has in the knuckle region a wall opening (17,18) in which the lean burn probe is mounted to produce the exhaust gas contact.
