PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save time to read a number of documents. SOLUTION: A user sets the first sheet of a document onto a document glass platen and sets the second and subsequent sheets of the document onto an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) (S1, S2) on the scanner side. Read conditions are set on the side of a PC which is connected with the scanner via a network (S3). The scanner temporarily reads the first sheet in response to a temporary reading instruction from the PC (S4) and transfers a temporarily read image to the PC (S5). It is judged from the temporarily read image whether an image is good or poor (S6) and if not good (S6, NG), the read conditions are changed and temporary re-read is instructed. If good (S6, OK), the start of main read is instructed (S7). In response to the instruction, the scanner consecutively reads the first sheet, second sheet and subsequent sheets (S8, S10), and the PC receives and combines the read images (S9, S11, S12).
