PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sample preparation apparatus capable of dyeing operation without having to complicate the structure of the apparatus. SOLUTION: A blood smear sample preparation apparatus (the sample preparation apparatus) 100 is provided with a cassette housing part 4; a glass slide insertion part 6 for inserting a glass slide 10 treated with a smear at a smearing part 2 in a cassette 3; a dyeing part 7 for performing dyeing treatment; a glass slide detecting sensor 60 for detecting whether the glass slide 10 is housed in the cassette 3 supplied for the glass slide insertion part 6 from the cassette housing part 4; a display operating part 101 capable of setting sample preparation mode either in automatic sample preparation mode for performing smearing treatment and dyeing treatment or in manual dyeing mode for performing dyeing treatment without smearing treatment; and a control unit 105 for controlling sample preparation operation on the basis of information detected by the glass slide detecting sensor 60 and set sample preparation mode.
