An acetylated N-acetylglucosamine derivative represented by the following general formula (1) and a hyaluronic acid production promoter containing the same and a skin preparation for external use containing the same. General formula (1): wherein R1 represents hydrogen or C2-18 alkyl; R 2, R3 and R4 may be either the same or different and each represents hydrogen or C2-18 acyl; and the stereostructure at the 1- position may be either alpha- or beta-structure, provided that R 1, R2, R3 and R4 do not represent hydrogen at the same time. It is intended to provide an easily available hyaluronic acid production promoter and a skin preparation for external use by which the production of hyaluronic acid can be promoted in the skin and thus the skin can be maintained in a firm and moisten state so that it is expected that the human skin can be prevented from aging.
