<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material, chief of which are titanium and iron, as a useful material of a permanent magnet. <P>SOLUTION: The material of a permanent magnet has a Laves phase as a main phase and is expressed by a composition formula (Ti<SB>1-m</SB>X<SB>m</SB>)(Fe<SB>1-n</SB>Y<SB>n</SB>)<SB>2</SB>Z<SB>p</SB>, where X is Zr or Hf, Y is V, Cr, Mn, Co or Ni, and Z is B, C or N.
