PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing apparatus capable of preventing data from being rewritten while an operator does not awake and protecting the important data. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with a network mode in which picture data is transmitted or received through a network and a normal mode in which recording, reproducing, or the like are performed with a single unit not through the network. At the time of the network mode in the apparatus in which the network mode and the normal mode are switchable, the recording operation of data to a recording medium and the erasing operation of data on the recording medium are inhibited regardless of that the state of an erroneous recording prevention means is a prevention state or a non-prevention state.
